Overview

Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Lactobacillus paracasei are probiotics with various health benefits supported by clinical (human) and preclinical (animal) studies.

Lactobacillus acidophilus has been shown to possess anticarcinogenic, hypocholesterolemic, and antagonistic activities against intestinal and food-borne pathogens.

It can enhance the intestinal epithelial tight junction barrier and protect against intestinal inflammation through a Toll-like receptor 2-dependent mechanism.

Additionally, it has immunomodulatory properties, enhancing both innate and adaptive immunity.

Bifidobacterium lactis (also known as Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis) is well-documented for its beneficial effects on gastrointestinal health and immune function.

It has been shown to improve bowel function, protect against diarrhea, and reduce the side effects of antibiotic treatment, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea.

It also supports a healthy gastrointestinal microbiota and enhances the body's resistance to common respiratory infections.

Lactobacillus plantarum exhibits several therapeutic benefits, including improving gastrointestinal symptoms, enhancing oral health, and reducing systemic inflammation.

Specific strains, such as L. plantarum 299v, have been effective in managing gastrointestinal disorders and reducing pathogenic colonization.

L. plantarum also has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, and it can regulate the intestinal microbiota composition positively.

Lactobacillus paracasei has been shown to have cardiometabolic benefits, such as improving endothelial function and reducing remnant cholesterol levels in subjects with metabolic syndrome.

It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities, with high gut adhesion ability and gastrointestinal tolerance.

Additionally, it has been effective in managing blood cholesterol and pressure, preventing gastric mucosal lesion development, and alleviating allergies.

These probiotics offer a range of health benefits, including gastrointestinal health, immune modulation, and metabolic improvements, supported by various clinical studies and reviews
