Glucosamine and Chondroitin
Overview
Glucosamine is primarily used for supporting knee health. The benefits of glucosamine include:
Glucosamine sulfate and Chondroitin sulfate have been shown to reduce discomfort and improve function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA).
This is supported by several studies and meta-analyses, which indicate a marginally favorable effect on pain scores and some improvement in knee function.
Some studies suggest that glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin may slow the progression of joint space narrowing in knee OA, potentially delaying the need for joint replacement surgery.
This effect has been observed in long-term studies over a period of three years.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin are generally well-tolerated with a safety profile comparable to placebo.
They have fewer gastrointestinal side effects compared to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Recent data suggest that regular consumption of glucosamine may support cardiovascular health, possibly due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Chondroitin improves physical function in OA patients.
Studies have reported significant improvements in the Lequesne Index and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) scores, which measure pain, stiffness, and physical function.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) recommend chondroitin sulfate as a first-line treatment for knee OA due to its efficacy and safety profile.
